Many clients have asked what the difference is between over-the-counter whitening products and our professional approach. Teeth whitening performed by a dentist will provide with faster and more dramatic results than the home-kits are able to. It also allows you to undergo this delicate process under the supervision of a professional, making the experience safer and more effective. We will also be able to do a shade assessment to determine what level of whitening you require.

At Smiles by Hillside we use Zoom! Whitening Technology. This technology bleaches your enamel and dentine. Most common causes of discoloration is aging and consumption of red wine, coffee, tea or tobacco.

After your whitening treatment, your teeth should continue to be lighter than they were before the treatment, if you adhere to some post treatment instructions. You should brush twice a day and you can occasionally touch up your bright smile with Zoom! take-home gel.

During your office visit your teeth will be exposed to Zoom! gel as well as the Zoom! Light, this light helps the gel penetrate into your tooth and as such improve your results by as much as eight shades! The gel is light activated and consists of hydrogen peroxide. This compound is broken down and active oxygen is released into the enamel and dentine, which in turn bleaches the coloured substances present in your teeth. While over the counter toothpastes can take months to lighten your teeth by a few shades, Zoom! Technology will give you a difference of about eight shades in one hour! The only way to achieve these dramatic results is under close supervision of a dentist such as Dr. Majithia.

The entire procedure will take slightly over an hour to complete. During bleaching your soft tissue will have to be completely protected from the light, so a short preparation for this is required. Smiles by Hillside also recommend a thorough cleaning before your teeth are whitened to optimize the results from your whitening experience. After your Zoom! Session a fluoride treatment is included to help strengthen your teeth and preserve your new white smile.

Whitening your teeth is a painless procedure; however some patients experience increased tooth sensitivity to cold substances. This is only temporary and will disappear within between one and three days after treatment. Patients who experience strong feelings of anxiety may have difficulty completing the treatment, if you feel you might be one of those people Dr. Majithia invites you to discuss this with him personally so your teeth whitening experience can be made as comfortable and relaxing as possible and you too can enjoy a brighter whiter smile!

Although the whitening treatment is completely safe, it is not recommended for children younger than thirteen years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

Protective eye wear is required and will be provided for the Zoom! treatment. Zoom! in office technology may not be suitable for people who are light sensitive or undergoing UV radiation therapy or photo-chemotherapy. Clients with melanoma should also avoid using Zoom! in office technology, these patients are however good candidates for the take-home kit. This product is still very different from any over the counter solution offered in your local drug store. The Zoom take home kit is distributed only by qualified dentists such as Dr Majithia and its use is closely supervised. Our patients are instructed on how to use the system to achieve an average of six shades whiter teeth after only three applications.
